“The religion of consumerism is like drinking salt water: the more you drink the thirstier you get” Colson and Pearcey.

Friday I was reading “Letters to a Student” by Donald J. Drew and was totally confronted with how materialistic I had become. Of course I’ve always struggled with this, but it had moved from a subtle problem to an uncontrollable desire for more. Often when God strikes you once he hits you a couple more times so you really get the point, Saturday night at a Bible Society dinner I was reminded of how much I have and how little some people have. The final blow was last night at church. We are looking at Malachi and how their worship was an insult to God. They only gave him the left overs, they didn’t fear him, serving God became a drag and they were hypocrites. They lost touch with God because life was too easy. “In the western world of consumerism and greed , live sensibly yet simply. Be for, and have time for, the hungry and the downtrodden. Don’t only have faith. Put it into practice, otherwise you and I, are deluding ourselves.” Donald J. Drew.

I watched a brilliant movie yesterday “Thumbsucker”. Not only good music and character development, but also had a great incite into life. A quote from the Orthodontist (Keanu Reeves) was:

“We all want to be problem less, to fix ourselves, we look for some magic solution to make us all better, but none of us really know what we’re doing. Why is that so bad? Its all we humans can do, guess, try, hope…just pray you don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ve got the answer, cause that’s bull, the trick is living without an answer…I think…I think.”

Maybe I was looking for some solution to fix my problems, but unlike the orthodontist I do know the answer I just ignored Him for a while.

hi lisa - i love the character keanu plays in thumbsucker. it echoes the sentiment of a buddhist nun called pema chodron whose work i have been reading. she says :

if we are willing to give up hope that insecurity and pain can be exterminated, then we can have the courage to relax with the groundlessness of our situation.

it says for me that suffering is a part of life, that it's okay not to know. that if we relax we are cared for.

If that's 'too deep', then let me get in way over my head. Love your work.
